International Western Music Association - Texas Chapter
Editor's Note:  Since many of the musicians and poets found on these pages are members of the International Western Music Association (IWMA), it seems only natural that there should be a space devoted to the Texas Chapter of which most are members.

While this page is not an officially sanctioned page of the IWMA or the IWMA-Texas Chapter, it seems necessary since many people are not Facebook people and still need a way to get information.

As Vice President of the Texas Chapter, I will do everything I can to insure that the information presented here is timely and accurate.

Please let your Texas Chapter friends know this page is here.

About thirty-five folks met at the Russell Farm Art Center on March 19th, 2017 in Burleson to form the Texas Chapter of the Western Music Association. The meeting was conducted by National WMA Executive Director, Marsha Short. Fast forward about a year, and that membership number has more than doubled!
The elected officers are Johnie Terry – President (Azle), Greg Bade – Vice President (Poolville), Kathy Sawyer – Secretary (Weatherford), and Kittie Bade - Interim Treasurer

While we do not officially take the reins for several months, we are already at work. Our first meeting was held July 27th in Fort Worth. We had an opportunity to meet each other and discuss our functions as board members in addition to setting our goals for the coming year.

 IWMA Texas Chapter Update
August 1st, 2018
The 2018 IWMA Texas Chapter Board met this past Friday to finalize some of the details of the 2019 “Music and Poetry of the West” (formally known as “Campfire Tales”) to be held at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo in January, 2019.

The dates have been set for January 29th, 30th and 31st. An e-mail invitation to participate will be sent out later this week to all Texas members by Event Coordinator Nicole Foley. You will have to respond to the e-mail to be eligible to participate.

For 2019, the youth fiddle contest has been expanded to include two categories. The first will be ages one to thirteen (1–13) and the second will be ages fourteen to eighteen (14-18). The contest will be held on Monday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The biggest and most exciting news is that the winners of the first category are slated to receive a ribbon and a buckle and the winners of the second category will receive scholarships courtesy of the Stock Show. Basically the Stock Show is making this event similar to the showing of animals. Additional details will be forthcoming.

Another first for 2019 is the addition of a poetry “Team Penning Challenge.” This event will also have two categories, an Open Division (open to any age - IWMA membership is not required) and a Junior Division, where high school students will be paired with an IWMA Performing Member poet or songwriter. Each team will have a designated amount of time to “pen” a poem and present it. This event will be held toward the end of the day on Wednesday, January 31st. Again, the specifics will be along, but there are still details to be worked out.

Other items discussed were future IWMA Branded Events for 2019. It is the plan to have at least one “branded” event per quarter, and we are working toward that end. If you have any ideas for an event in your area, please let me know. Your active participation in our chapter will help insure that 2019 will be a great year!

The next event on the calendar is of course the National Convention, in Albuquerque in November. I am told that there will be some international members in attendance, so there will be an opportunity to make new friends from overseas.

The Texas Chapter will have a notable presence this year in the form of a table with brochures, a banner and other items of interest. It is my hope that the table will have someone from the chapter there throughout the day, so if you are able to donate an hour or two of your time, please let me know. This will not be the only time I will be making this request. I would like it to be a meeting place for anyone who needs a place to “land” for a spell.

Lots of exciting things in store for the remainder of 2018 and for 2019. Glad to have you along for trip.

  Keep checking your e-mails.

 IWMA Texas Chapter Update
September 1st, 2018
The Texas Chapter is looking for help in designing a banner to be used first at our table at the IWMA Convention in Albuquerque, and second at the Music and Poetry of the West event at the Fort Worth Stock Show in January. Thereafter it will be used at any and all IWMA Texas Chapter branded events.

For design purposes, the finished banner will be 2-1/2 ft. in height and 6 ft. in length. The design must have the official IWMA logo displayed, and it has been suggested that the Texas flag be prominent since it is an almost universally recognizable symbol.

If you have an idea for a banner to represent our chapter and our great state, please consider submitting a design. Submissions will be voted on by the 2018 and 2019 Boards of Directors. Submissions should be in as high a resolution as possible and be in pdf format. Please send them directly to me no later than September 22nd. The winning design will be announced and posted here the first part of October.

Looking forward to seeing your talents.
