This Victor Talking Machine Model VV-405 was one of Victor’s “Art Case” models, introduced in 1923. It was one of three deluxe flat-top console models. These short-lived series of console-style machines were intended to be a premium product targeted toward wealthy customers. This premium machine featured gold plated hardware, a four spring motor and elegantly contrasting veneers and stains. The model VV-405 was the most popular of the three, and its basic Spanish Renaissance design theme was used on the popular Orthophonic Granada when it was introduced in late 1925. Ornate round turned legs, along with a lateral stiffening “bar” between the legs are the key elements of this machine’s design theme.
Only 21,000 VV-405’s were made, which makes them rather scarce.
Whether sitting in a field of Bluebonnets or in a crowded plaza in France, Kristyn is ... well, Kristyn is Kristyn!
This machine was purchased in 1925 for the Shamburger Ranch located northwest of Crowell, Texas. It was later moved to North Fort Worth. It is currently on loan to the Fort Worth Stockyard's Museum from the family of Ed and Jean Brown. The first sound you will hear is the cranking of the machine.

A Very Special Feature For March
I recently had the pleasure of hosting a virtual music and poetry showcase as a contribution to Music and Poetry of the West 2021. There was no official Fort Worth Stock Show this year, but we wanted to do our part to keep the tradition alive. The video is a little over an hour and features these musicians and poets: Greg Bade, Smokey Culver, Tim Martin & Glenn Murray, K.C. LaCourse, Geoff McKay, Ed Meyer, John Pelham, John Clayton Reed, The Sawyers and Bob & Johnie Terry.
Many thanks to all the performers, and a very special thanks to K.C. LaCourse for doing the compilation of the videos and a special thanks to Dawn Anita for providing the interlude music titled “Sook Sook,” a tune her daddy used to call the piggies into the corral. Dawn also provides the music that plays during the credits with a song called “Stand Up I’m Talkin’ Bout Texas.”
Click on the Texas emblem above to go to the YouTube video. You do not need a YouTube account to view the showcase. We certainly hope you enjoy it.
